Sir George Young was appointed Secretary of State for Transport on 5 July 1995. Born in 1941, Sir George Young was educated at Eton, Christ Church, Oxford, and the University of Surrey. He was a councillor on the London Borough of Lambeth from 1968 to 1971 and a GLC member for the London Borough of Ealing between 1970 to 1973. Sir George worked with the National Economic Development Council from 1966 to 1967 and then spent two years as Kobler Research fellow at the University of Surrey. From 1969 to 1974 he was Economic Adviser to the Post Office Corporation. Sir George Young has been MP for Ealing Acton since 1974. Following his election to Parliament he was an Opposition Whip between 1976 and 1979 and a Junior Health Minister from 1979 to 1981. He was a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of the Environment between 1981 and 1986 and was appointed to the Whips' Office in July 1990. From November 1990 he was Minister of State until his appointment as Financial Secretary to the Treasury in July 1994. Sir George is married and has four children. His interests include cycling, squash, and opera. He is a Queen's Park Rangers supporter.
