New ministerial responsibilities at the Department of Transport were announced today by the Secretary of State for Transport, Sir George Young. John Watts, Minister of State, will cover all railways issues and road infrastructure policy, including national roads, local roads and the Highways Agency. He will also be taking on responsibility for local transport outside London. He will take the title "Minister for Railways, Roads and Local Transport". John Bowis, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, will be responsible for all transport matters in London and for road safety. He will take the title "Minister for Transport in London and for Road Safety". He will be the spokesman for aviation and shipping matters in the Commons. He will also be the Minister with lead responsibility for Deregulation and Small Businesses. Viscount Goschen, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, will continue to be responsible for aviation, shipping and ports with the title "Minister for Aviation and Shipping". He will also take on the responsibility for co-ordinating European transport issues, reporting direct to the Secretary of State.
