Railtrack appoints 'Mr London'

Railtrack has appointed a 'Mr London' to progress strategic rail schemes in the Capital.

John Nelson, 49, has joined Railtrack PLC as Director, London Developments and will be responsible for looking at ways of enhancing and developing rail opportunities in the London area. He will have particular responsibility for the present and potential Heathrow rails links, along with the East London Line, Woolwich River Crossing and Cross Rail schemes.

The role has a key interface with political representatives and public interest groups and will co-ordinate relationships with partners such as British Airports Authority.

Mr Nelson brings a wealth of railway experience with him. His most recent appointments include Managing Director Network South East and from 1994 he was the Group Managing Director for the Passenger Trains Companies serving London and the South East. He will take up his appointment at an early date to be announced.

Welcoming his appointment, Railtrack Chief executive, John Edmonds, said: 'I am delighted that John has accepted this key position which further strengthens Railtrack's commercial team. John's experience and knowledge of the railway, particularly in London and the South East, will add a new dimension to the commercial focus of Railtrack.'

Mr Nelson said 'I am very pleased to be joining Railtrack at a time when there are so many positive developments in prospect for railways in the London area. I am looking forward to working with the many groups and companies in London to translate our shared aspirations into a tangible reality.'
