Ticket tout Rupert Alexis starts a three month prison sentence today following his conviction at the Royal Courts of Justice on Friday 31 January for contempt of court after an injunction prohibited him from entering London Underground premises.
Alexis, 36, from Brixton, was served with an Injunction on Friday 8 November 1996 after he had ignored letters served by London Underground banning him from the system. Five other persistent ticket touts were also served with ban letters.
Ticket touting involves illegal buying and selling of used Tube tickets, particularly One Day Travelcards.
Nick Agnew from London Underground said: "This is the first prison sentence issued to a ticket tout and it sends a stern warning to others that we will not tolerate persistent loss of revenue or passenger and staff intimidation.
"Passengers should also bear in mind that buying, selling or using second-hand tickets is not only illegal but costs London Underground an estimated £1 million annually which could otherwise be invested in the system."
