David Hockney joins an illustrious list of leading artists commissioned by London Transport when his colourful new work "Tate gallery by bus and tube" brightens up the Underground from early July.

Hockney’s work, commissioned for the London Transport Art series, celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the National Gallery of British Art, now popularly known as "the Tate".

The London Transport commission continues a long tradition dating back to the beginning of the century. Other famous artists commissioned over the years include Howard Hodgkin, John Bellany and Man Ray.

Reproductions and postcards of the Hockney poster are on sale at the Tate Gallery and the London Transport Museum shop in Covent Garden. The Museum shop also offers a wide range of other poster reproductions, books and postcards drawing on LT’s design and artistic heritage.

The London Transport Museum is responsible for the historic collection of some 5,000 original posters relating to travel in London. The entire collection can be seen on screen by visitors to the Museum’s Resource Centre.

A series of exhibitions, publications and events will celebrate the first one hundred years of the Tate Gallery’s life, with special celebrations during the week 21-27 July.
