Railtrack is spending over £2 million on six stations on the line from Carmarthen to Hereford as part of its £1 billion station regeneration programme.
The stations, where improvement works are already in progress are Hereford, Abergavenny, Penarth, Barry Town, Barry Island, Eastbrook and Carmarthen.
At Hereford £740,000 has been earmarked for an upgrade of the canopy as well as platform resurfacing and repairs to the footbridge and forecourt.
Abergavenny station will benefit from a £365,000 facelift. There will be work carried out on the platforms and their canopy roofs, whilst the footbridge and forecourt will also undergo repairs. The entire station will be re painted.
Railtrack has completed work valued at over £230,000 on Penarth Station. The platform surfaces and forecourt will be improved by resurfacing and new lighting will be installed around the stations, as well repainting and new fencing.
Five miles further west, both Barry Town and Barry Island stations will be refurbished as part of this programme. The work at Barry Town, costing over £400,000, will cover general improvements to the platform roofs, lighting, car park and new fencing. Barry Island is having £73,000 spent on similar works.
Work at Carmarthen station, costing over £560,000, is due to be completed in September. Work includes general refurbishment work at the station and resurfacing of the car park and platforms.
Railtrack Director, Andy Hancock, said "We are working with the train operators to improve all the stations on the network. These stations are just the first part of the our enormous investment programme.
"The travelling public who use these stations should be able to feel they are part of a caring, clean environmentally friendly organisation. The station should have the facilities to enhance the start and finish of every journey," he added.
These stations are part of Railtrack's station regeneration programme costing over £1 billion. Over 2,500 stations will be refurbished over the next five years.
