Railtrack is spending £2.8 million refurbishing Taunton and Exeter stations as part of its £1 billion station regeneration programme.
Over £1.8 million is being spent on upgrading Exeter St David's station. The station's canopy will be repaired and painted and new lighting will be installed. The platforms beneath the canopy roof are to be resurfaced and the footbridge will repaired and repainted. An additional emergency escape staircase to the lift bridge is also being built to improve access.
Over £900,000 is to be spent on structural and cosmetic improvements at Taunton station. Complete refurbishment of the station will include repairs to stone and brickwork, new gutters, repairs to the slate roof, fascia and painting work.. The station entrance will undergo a facelift with redecoration, new flooring and a public address system. The work on both stations is being managed by extended arm contractor Bovis.
Railtrack Director, Andy Hancock, said: "We are working with the train operators to improve all the stations across the country. These two station are just the first part of the our enormous investment programme. The travelling public who use these stations should be able to feel they are part of a caring, clean environmentally friendly organisation."
