Cable companies looking to expand within central London are being invited to take advantage of surplus capacity among London Underground's existing network of underground tunnels and ducts.

The Underground system, covering over 106 miles through the capital, provides the ideal opportunity for third parties to lay their own cables by reducing pedestrian inconvenience and saving money by avoiding roadworks.

Sharmeen Lalani-Fade, Business Development Manager, said: "We are making a determined effort to take a share in the projected telecoms boom by promoting the spare capacity in our network to likely customers.

"The cable business already raises over £2 million a year in revenue and we hope this will increase in the near future. The money generated from selling surplus capacity is spent on urgent improvements to the Underground that we could otherwise not afford."
