Britain's passenger train operators today warmly welcomed Sir David Davies' support for the development and implementation plans for train protection systems on the rail network.
The train operators said the installation of the train protection and warning systems (TPWS) and extended installation of automatic train protection (ATP) on principal routes, will signal a new safety era for the railways.
ATOC Director General George Muir said: "We believe a blend of TPWS and ATP will maximise safety by mitigating the effects of signals passed at danger (SPADs). We are already committed to installing TPWS equipment on the entire passenger fleet by December 2003.
"The next step for the industry is now to adopt more sophisticated systems of train protection that can be quickly built into the network after 2003 to reduce the number SPADs even further.
"The railway industry already has plans in place for the implementation of TPWS and is closely monitoring the trialling of ATP systems in Europe. We will be happy to detail our progress to the Cullen Inquiry which starts later this year," Mr Muir said.
