Brian Mellitt, Chairman of The Railway Forum, today welcomed the decision of Government to leave the major responsibility for rail safety with the Safety & Standards Directorate of Railtrack, pending the outcome of the Cullen Inquiry.
He said "This endorses the Forum’s view that matters of safety on Britain’s Railways are best left to people with expertise and experience in railway practice, underpinned by the legislation identified in the 1993 Railways Act".
"We support the Government’s view that safety in rail transport should have the highest priority. Rail remains the safest form of land transport in the UK and the whole industry is committed with all parties to sustain and improve safety on Britain’s Railways".
"Whatever changes of responsibility may be finally determined, the future delivery of safety on Britain’s Railways will depend on focused management effort and attention to detail in the key areas of staff performance, operational procedures and engineering diligence".
