Commenting on the Strategic Rail Authority's bulletin on train performance between 10th December 2000 and 3rd March 2001, ATOC Director General, George Muir, said:
“The most recent figures, compiled by ATOC, show punctuality recovering to 82% (within the Passenger's Charter definition) in the past two weeks. This improvement follows the vast amount of engineering work being done on the track.
This is also having a positive effect on passenger numbers. Our latest figures show that more people are now travelling by train than during the same period last year and this is helping with the recovery of revenue.
The national revenue figure for March is down by only three per cent when compared with this time last year, which is a significant improvement on February (down 7%) and December 2000 (down 14%), however, that picture masks continuing difficulties, particularly on the inter-city routes. (see notes to editor)
Overall, therefore, the message is a positive one. The railways are returning to pre-Hatfield levels of performance and this picture will continue to improve over the coming weeks.”
