Commenting on the announcement of shortlisted bidders for the East Coast rail franchise, Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, said: “This marks a further important step in bringing private sector innovation and investment back to what is a crucial part of the railway for Britain’s economy.

“Britain has a winning formula where private operators are focused on encouraging more rail use and Network Rail concentrates on improving the infrastructure and this is delivering for passengers, businesses and taxpayers. Growth is generating revenue to help sustain one of the biggest investment programmes in the railway’s history, delivering more trains, better stations and faster services, in turn attracting more passengers and freight.”
