Commenting on the beginning of a new five year, £38bn programme to maintain and improve the railway infrastructure, Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, which speaks on behalf of the rail industry, said:
“Today marks the next stage in a long term multi billion investment programme that is transforming the railway for the better, delivering improved services for passengers and businesses. Network Rail and the operators of passenger and freight services are working together to maximise the benefits to the country as a whole.”
