Responding to the Northern Transport Strategy report, a spokesman for the Rail Delivery Group, which represents Network Rail and train operators, said:
“Rail is playing an increasingly important role in meeting the transport needs of people in the north of England. Alongside Network Rail’s electrification programme, competitions for the Northern and Transpennine franchises already promise many improvements for passengers in the medium term.
"This report underlines the importance of planning now for the better services that will be needed to underpin jobs, drive economic growth, connect friends and family, and deliver cleaner and safer travel in the decades ahead.”
