Make rail travel more attractive to passengers, say campaigners _______________________________________________________________
 type Press release
Campaign for Better Transport has responded to the publication of new statistics by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) showing the fall in the number of passenger rail journeys across the UK. The figures also show the number of journeys made using season tickets has fallen by 12 per cent indicating passengers prefer more flexible tickets for their journeys. Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive, Campaign for Better Transport said: “The fall in rail passenger journeys shows that rather than ploughing billions into new road building projects, which only adds more traffic to our already congested roads, the government should give rail the investment it really needs, making it a more attractive and affordable option for passengers. “With the change to people’s working patterns we need to see the introduction of season tickets for part-time workers and improvements to a ticketing system which is far too complex. “Also, with some of the highest fares in Europe, and regulated rail fares set to rise by around four per cent next January, the Government must step in and freeze fares, or risk further alienating passengers.” Ends Notes to editors o Read the ORR’s rail usage stats here – Passenger Rail Usage 2017-18 Q1 [[see related documents]] o Read about Campaign for Better Transport’s research into flexible ticketing here - UK lagging way behind Europe, when it comes to flexible rail tickets o Read our press release - Calls for a commuter fares freeze as next year's increases announced o Campaign for Better Transport’s Fair Fares Now campaign calls for cheaper, simpler, fairer rail fares
